While school children were playing around during their day off from school on Kenyatty Day, 15-year-old Joseph Oginga and his seven partners left home to go to Kariokor Community Center in Nairobi for another day of dance classes.
At the training hall, Oginga danced to drum beats.Like other kids, he jumped from one corner of the room to another while teachers were on hand to correct him if he missed a step.
Oginga is part of a group of children learning traditional African dances in African Tumbas, a dance troupe. The troupe starts a traning program to teach children traditional African dances. According to David Kavashia, assistant director of the troupe, 18 children aged from 10 to 15 were now learing the dances.
"I love dancing very much. I think I have a talent for it,"Oginga said. He said that he was attracted by the performance of the troupe when he first saw it at school.He joined the training program and had been to Norway and the Netherlands to perform." We brought our textbooks with us when we go abroad, to avoid falling behind in studies,"Oginga said.
"We are not doing this to make money,"Kavashia said."By doing this, we help children preserve and carry on their traditional cultural heritage."
