Once upon a time . . . a big crow got himself a lump of nice, round cheese and went to perch on a branch of a tree to eat it in peace.
Along came a fox, as clever as they come---sniffed the air and stopped below the tree, his mouth watering. Then, he set his wits to work to discover some way of getting the cheese.
"Oh crow," called fox, "How well you are looking! You are a fine crow! I've never seen anyone so big and strong. What lovely thick shiny feathers you have! And such slender neck, the sign of a noble bird. How bright your eyes! How glossy your feathers!"
The crow had, till then, been blissfully listening to the fox's praise, but he felt a prick of doubt.
The fox further elaborates, "Your figure is better than all the other birds’ figures, and I’ll bet your voice is better than all the other birds’ voices. Let me hear you sing a song, and I will always call you the King of Birds.”
Well, crow had never heard anyone say such a complimentary thing. So, he opened up his beak and he began to squawk and sing.
Down fell the cheese into the waiting mouth of the fox below.
There gone the cheese and the fox with full stomach.
Remember, don’t trust people who flatter you too much.
