hardly...when...是固定词组,翻译成“一…就…”
这个结构的特点是,hardly所在的主句必须使用过去完成时,而when引导的从句必须使用一般过去偶是.如果hardly位于句首,则要求主句使用半倒装.
所以这句话才会出现 hardly had the expert sat down这种形式.
“/”表示前后的词组可以任选.既可以用sat down也可以用got seated也可以用seated themselves.
这里有个句型"hardly......when......""一……就……"。然后Hardly位于句首，hardly后的句子倒装，when引导的句子不变。这句话的主干是"演讲比赛开始了"，其它的都相当于修饰。括号里表达的意思都是一样的。
