The Dead Sea is located in Israel and Jordan,about 15 miles east of Jerusalem.(A map of the Dead Sea Region is available).It is extremely deep (averaging about 1,000 feet),salty (some parts containing the highest amount of salts possible),and the lowest body of water in the world.The Dead Sea is supplied by a number of smaller streams,springs,and the Jordan River.
Because of its low elevation and its position in a deep basin,the climate of the Dead Sea area is unusual.Its very high evaporation does produce a haze yet its atmospheric humidity is low.Adjacent areas to it are very arid and favorable for the preservation of materials like the Dead Sea Scrolls.
The Bible's description,in Genesis 19,of a destructive earthquake near the Dead Sea area during the time of Abraham is borne out by archaeological and historic investigation.While no evidence remains of the five cities of the plain (Zeboim,Admah,Bela or Zoar,Sodom,and Gomorrah) their sites are believed to be beneath the waters at the southern end of the sea.
Archaeological sites near the Dead Sea include Masada,Ein Gedi,and Qumran (where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found).

The Dead Sea has an area of 1,050 km˛, with a length of 76 km, and a maximum width of 16 km. Maximum depth is 396 metres. The Dead Sea is geologically part of the Rift Valley system. The principal source of the Dead Sea is the Jordan River, but there are other streams feeding it too. There is no outlet for the lake, and evaporation leads to the high content of salt, as it is about 6 times more salty than the ocean water. Among the salts in the Dead Sea are sodium chloride, magnesium chloride, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, and magnesium bromide. There is no life in the lake.
Extraction of potash, bromine, gypsum, salt and other chemical products is one of the few effective means of utilizing the Dead Sea as a resource. Near the Dead Sea lies Qumran, where the Dead Sea scrolls were found, and the important Israeli national monument of Masada.

It is said to be the lowest point on Earth, at 420 metres (1,378 ft) below sea level;[2] its shores are actually the lowest point on dry land, as there are deeper points on Earth under water or ice. At 330m deep (1,083 feet), the Dead Sea is the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. It is also the world's second saltiest body of water, after Lake Asal in Djibouti. With 30 percent salinity, it is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean [3]. Israeli experts say it is nine times saltier than the Mediterranean Sea (31.5% salt versus 3.5% for the Mediterranean). The Dead Sea is 67 kilometres (42 mi) long and 18 kilometres (11 mi) wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.
