“Rhetoric” is one of those words that wrinkle the brow.Few people have a working definition at hand,and most people,in and out of the academy,associate the term with deception or manipulation.Rhetoric,in common parlance,is the language used when someone is trying to hide the truth.It’s associated with sleazy politicians and used car salesmen.
These definitions are definitely part of the history of rhetoric,and it’s certainly the case that language is used in such ways every day.But it’s worth exploring the ways that that same power of language can be put to ethical and beneficial uses.Some would even say that there is no use of language,including even seemingly objective or neutral forms,that doesn’t involve some component of persuasion:a shaping of the content,truth,or message.
Rhetorical theorists,scholars,writers,politicians,and philosophers have derived a number of answers to this question over the 2,500 years of rhetoric's history:
To figure out what we mean:as a mode of inquiry,a means of discovering knowledge and giving shape to experience;
To persuade others to take our point of view and to accept the results of our inquiries as valid and useful;
To protect ourselves from those who use it to their advantage (and others’ disadvantage);
To enhance our pleasure in using and experiencing symbol systems of all kinds:language,visual arts,even music;
To preserve,or even more basically,to define,our humanity; as an alternative to solving conflicts through violence.
Most of these definitions can be traced back to rhetoric's origins in the cultures of the ancient Mediterranean.
